Ghana MTTD targets Accra as model city for safe riding in 2026

ACP Samuel Sasu Mensah says Ghana’s traffic police will work with PRURide partners to improve safety and dignity for cyclists in Accra.

Ghana’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) wants Accra to become a model city for safe cycling, with ACP Dr Samuel Sasu Mensah pledging the department’s support for the 2026 PRURide initiative.

Mensah, the Ghana Police Service’s National Director of Operations for the MTTD, made the commitment at the launch of this year’s PRURide. He said the initiative should address more than the practical needs of cyclists, placing equal importance on their safety and the dignity they receive while using the road.

The planned cooperation links the MTTD with Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and other organisations involved in PRURide. The programme is focused on cycling, safer road use and a greener environment for cyclists in Accra, while also supporting the development of commercial riding in Ghana.

The launch included representatives of the Ghana Cycling Federation, the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Ghana Police Service and the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate. Their involvement reflects the range of institutions supporting the 2026 programme.

PRURide’s public riding activities will begin with a Fun Ride at the University of Ghana campus on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The ride will start at 7am from Diaspora Halls, with the Minister of Sports and Recreation, the GOC president, the National Sports Authority director general, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana staff, corporate organisations, cyclists, students and members of the public expected to attend.

The elite competition is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, on the Borteyman Highway. With MTTD support and participation from its wider group of partners, PRURide 2026 will combine competitive cycling with its road-safety and commercial-riding objectives.
