Ghana Sports Minister questions publicity for 2026 Premier League

Kofi Adams says Ghana’s top flight lacks recognisable stars and club marketing ahead of the 2026 Ghana Premier League season.

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has questioned the visibility of the Ghana Premier League ahead of its 2026 season. The campaign is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 5, with Port City facing FC AshantiGold 04 in an opening fixture between two new boys.

Adams raised the issue while delivering the keynote address at the Ghana Football Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress. His concern centred on whether clubs and the league have given supporters enough reason to follow the new campaign and attend matches.

The minister said the competition currently lacked easily identifiable figures who could draw attention from fans, especially younger supporters. He pointed to the absence of a prominent player whose name dominates conversations, whose shirt children want to wear or whose image would be suitable for promotional campaigns.

Adams contrasted the current situation with an earlier period when players such as Charles Taylor, Dong Bortey, Ishmael Addo and Stephen Oduro were widely recognised. He said those footballers had become attractions, with supporters familiar with their personalities and the rivalries surrounding them.

He also questioned why clubs have not made fuller use of the expanded media environment available to them. In his view, the league now has more channels through which players and teams can be promoted than in the past, yet the personalities capable of carrying that promotion remain difficult to identify.

The remarks place attention on the league’s public profile before the first ball is kicked in the 2026 season. Port City and FC AshantiGold 04 will provide the opening fixture on September 5, but Adams’ wider concern is whether the competition has created enough recognisable players and stories to sustain supporter interest beyond the start of the campaign.
