Ghana sports minister warns GFA over foreign-based talent reliance
Kofi Iddie Adams has urged the GFA to strengthen Ghana’s domestic football system instead of relying too heavily on players developed abroad.
Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has warned the Ghana Football Association against allowing foreign-based players to mask weaknesses in the country’s domestic football structure.
Adams delivered the warning on Thursday, August 20, 2026, while serving as the special guest of honour at the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress. The meeting took place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The minister said Ghana should recognise and celebrate players who have developed abroad and are performing well. However, he argued that their success should not reduce the urgency of improving football at home.
In his view, the quality of the domestic game is closely linked to the performance of Ghana’s national teams. A stronger local system would give the country a more reliable foundation for producing players and supporting the wider football structure.
Adams said that foundation must extend beyond footballers. He identified coaches, referees and administrators among the people a healthy domestic game should develop, while also pointing to football knowledge and commercial value as necessary parts of the system. He further stressed the need for the local game to provide excitement.
His remarks placed responsibility on the GFA to ensure that Ghanaian football benefits from both its international talent and its domestic competitions. The minister’s position was that players thriving outside the country should be viewed as an asset, but not as a substitute for a functioning local ecosystem.
