Pieter Coetze set to attend first national awards ceremony in person

Pieter Coetze will attend his first national awards ceremony after missing the 2022 event, following a breakthrough season packed with major medals.

Pieter Coetze is preparing to attend his first national awards ceremony in person after illness prevented him from collecting the prize when he won it in 2022. The 22-year-old swimmer is nominated again and will share the category with boxer Kevin Lerena and golfer Christiaan Maas.

Coetze, who was unable to attend the previous ceremony, said being present this time would make the occasion especially meaningful. He regards the nomination itself as a significant honour, regardless of the outcome in a competitive field.

The University of Pretoria student has built a strong case through a productive 2025 season. He earned major medals at the World University Games in Germany and the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, marking a notable step forward for the 2024 Olympian on the international stage.

His form continued at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier this month. Coetze won three individual medals, set a Games record and helped South Africa collect further medals in the relay events. His relay performances also contributed to a successful campaign for the national swimming team.

The swimmer has described the Commonwealth event as an important part of his development, having won his first international medal at an earlier edition. He also placed value on competing at the meet and helping South Africa’s relays move closer to the leading teams, even while recognising that some of his individual races could have been faster.

Coetze’s progress is being measured against a longer-term target. The former Hoërskool Rustenburg learner is aiming to win his first Olympic medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, viewing his recent results as part of an ongoing process of improvement.
