Ibrahim Tanko open to Ghana Black Stars coaching role with support
Medeama coach Ibrahim Tanko says he would consider leading Ghana's Black Stars if the authorities back him in the vacant role.
Medeama coach Ibrahim Tanko says he would accept the Black Stars coaching job if Ghana provide the support he considers necessary, with the team preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The vacant post would be the seventh Black Stars coaching appointment during Kurt Okraku’s time as Ghana Football Association president.
Ghana currently have no substantive head coach after the reported departure of Carlos Queiroz. His exit followed disagreements with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over demands linked to the role.
Tanko has emerged as a possible candidate for the position, alongside assistant coach Desmond Ofei. He previously worked as an assistant to former Ghana head coach Kwesi Appiah, giving him experience within the senior national-team setup.
The 47-year-old coach also led the Black Meteors, Ghana’s Under-23 team. That spell ended without qualification for the Olympic Games, but Tanko remains active at club level with Medeama.
Tanko’s position is that he would take the national-team job if the authorities decide he is the appropriate candidate and give him the backing required to work. His comments put him among the names connected with the vacancy as Ghana prepares for the next stage of its international programme.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September before beginning their campaign to reach the 2027 AFCON in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Ghana missed the 2025 tournament in Morocco and will be seeking a return to the continental finals.
