Janine van Wyk launches autobiography to inspire young players
Former Banyana Banyana legend Janine van Wyk has released her autobiography to share her experiences and mental fortitude with the next generation.
Janine van Wyk has released her autobiography in an effort to motivate the next generation of footballers. The book, which she co-authored with journalist Firdose Moonda, was launched in Johannesburg on Thursday night.
Van Wyk stated that the publication focuses on the mental strength necessary to thrive as a professional athlete. She noted that she had intended to write the book even during her active playing career. Through the text, she aims to detail her journey as a female footballer in South Africa, including the difficulties she encountered while growing up, her entry into the national team, and her travels across Africa.
The Banyana Banyana legend also used the occasion to discuss the treatment of players and the obstacles faced before competing in major tournaments. She expressed a desire to alert current players to the psychological resilience required for success in the sport. Van Wyk believes that every professional footballer possesses a distinct narrative and has urged more players to record their own histories.
She emphasized that documenting these experiences allows for the public discussion of challenges that exist beyond fame and financial rewards. By sharing these truths, she hopes to provide different perspectives on how to build a successful career in football.
Reflecting on her work off the pitch, van Wyk spoke about JVW FC, the institution she founded in 2012. She described the club as a life-changing entity dedicated to the development of young female footballers. Some players from the club have progressed to major domestic teams, earned national team caps, or moved into roles within sports administration. Her goal remains to see young girls secure opportunities to pursue their footballing ambitions.
