Justine Madugu criticized after Super Falcons lose 2-1 to South Africa

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu faced intense criticism from football analysts following Nigeria's 2-1 defeat to South Africa in Casablanca. The loss in the WAFCON playoff encounter ended the Falcons' final opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

South Africa secured the victory through goals from Thembi Kgatlana in the 56th minute and Refiloe Jane in the 77th minute. Jane was sent off during stoppage time, allowing Nigeria's Christy Ucheibe to score a penalty in the 93rd minute. Despite the late goal, Nigeria could not recover to change the outcome.

Following the final whistle, Madugu became the primary target of criticism from fans, former players, coaches, and analysts across various social media platforms and WhatsApp groups. Much of the backlash focused on his tactical decisions, which many observers described as clueless.

The defeat marks a significant downturn for the Nigerian side. After failing to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following a quarterfinal loss to Cameroon, the team has now missed out on the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. This absence is notable as the Falcons have participated in every tournament since the inaugural edition in 1991.
