Khuliso Mudau injury clouds Sundowns’ 2-0 PSL win over Gallants
Khuliso Mudau was stretchered off during Sundowns’ 2-0 PSL win over Marumo Gallants, with an Achilles injury threatening his season.
Mamelodi Sundowns beat Marumo Gallants 2-0 in the Premier Soccer League, but the victory was overshadowed by a serious injury to right-back Khuliso Mudau. The South Africa international left the field before half-time and could miss the remainder of the season.
Mudau was forced off in the 38th minute after suffering damage to his Achilles tendon. He was carried from the pitch on a stretcher, with Zuko Mdunyelwa taking his place for the rest of the match.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said after the game that the injury appeared serious, although its full extent had not yet been established. The 31-year-old defender will require further assessment before the club can determine how long he will be unavailable.
The potential loss is significant for the defending PSL champions. Mudau has been a regular at right-back since moving from Black Leopards to Sundowns in the 2020/21 season, having previously played for Magesi FC and JDR Stars FC.
His performances for Sundowns have also brought regular recognition with Bafana Bafana. A lengthy absence would therefore affect both the club’s campaign and South Africa’s plans for upcoming international commitments.
Sundowns still collected all three points against Gallants, but the result came at a heavy cost. The club’s immediate priority is now establishing the severity of Mudau’s injury and planning for his replacement while he begins his recovery.
