LaLiga: Sevilla Reinstate Ejuke After Failed Exit Despite 2-1 Win

Sevilla have returned Nigeria international Chidera Ejuke to their squad after failing to find a buyer, though his future remains unresolved.

Sevilla have reinstated Nigeria international Chidera Ejuke after their attempt to move him out of the club failed, following a 2-1 victory in their opening LaLiga match. The result leaves Sevilla third in the 2026 table with three points from one game and a 2-1 goal record.

Ejuke was excluded from Sevilla’s pre-season matches and worked away from the main group while the club considered his future. He returned to the squad last week after Sevilla were unable to find sufficient interest in the 28-year-old winger.

The Nigeria international then came off the bench for the final 13 minutes of the opening league fixture. His return means he is back within the first-team setup for the new campaign, although the club have not made a firm commitment to keep him after the transfer window closes.

Sevilla’s difficulty in finding a solution was also linked to their recruitment plans. The club missed out on Adrian Liso, their leading target for the flank, after the Real Zaragoza player moved to Mallorca. Without interest in Ejuke, Sevilla could not create the space in their squad and wage bill that would have helped them pursue the move.

Anderlecht were the only club to make an offer for Ejuke, but the transfer did not progress after the Belgian side considered his wages too high. Sevilla have therefore brought him back into the group while leaving open the possibility of a late departure.

The immediate focus is the next league fixture away to Athletic Club on August 22. Sevilla’s recent results have been mixed, with two wins, two defeats and a draw across their last five listed matches, but their league campaign has started with maximum points.
