Leeds United near Nico Elvedi deal pending Gladbach replacement

Leeds United are moving closer to securing the signature of Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi. The club is currently working toward a full agreement to bring the defender to Elland Road this summer.

While a verbal agreement exists between the 29-year-old Switzerland international and Leeds, the transfer depends on specific requirements from the Bundesliga side. Borussia Mönchengladbach have set a minimum price of €10m for the player. Additionally, the German club will only permit the move if they can secure a replacement for the defender first.

Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder is tasked with finding a new centre-back to fill the void Elvedi would leave. Schröder is looking for a player with experience in the Bundesliga. Potential options for the club include Kō Itakura, who was previously considered in January, or Sebastiaan Bornauw.

Elvedi's current contract with Mönchengladbach runs until 2027. His recent performances, including a strong run at the World Cup, led manager Eugen Polański to appoint him as vice-captain. The move to Leeds would also offer a reunion with manager Daniel Farke, who previously coached the defender at Gladbach.

Leeds United are preparing a formal offer to convince the German club to facilitate the transfer. Although the exact fee has not been confirmed, the club expects to complete the services of the defender during the current summer window if the conditions in Germany are met.
