Maa community celebrates Josephine Sembeyo's gold medal win
Josephine Sembeyo was welcomed at JKIA by the Maa community following her 1500m gold medal victory at the World Under 20 Championships in Oregon.
Members of the Maa community gathered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday night to welcome Josephine Sembeyo home. The AIC Loitoktok Secondary School student returned to Kenya after winning the gold medal in the women’s 1500m at the World Under 20 Championships in Oregon.
Sembeyo secured the victory with a time of 4:16.73, defeating American runner Claire Stegall. This performance makes her the first Kenyan champion in this specific event since the 2012 championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Large groups of men, women, and children wearing traditional regalia arrived at Terminal 1A. The crowd used singing and dancing to celebrate while waiting for Sembeyo and the rest of Team Kenya to pass through immigration. Airport security worked to manage the large group of people attempting to reach the entrance to see the athlete.
Sembeyo stated that her success was the result of maintaining a focused mindset despite the difficult competition. She noted that she fought through the race with the specific goal of reaching the podium.
Nominated senator Hezena Lemaletian described the achievement as a significant victory for minority communities and for young girls. The senator expressed pride in the athlete's performance and its impact on the community.
As celebrations move toward Kajiado County, the achievement is expected to serve as an inspiration for young people in the region to pursue sporting ambitions despite sociocultural challenges.
