Mamelodi Sundowns consider European transfer for Thato Sibiya

Mamelodi Sundowns are currently weighing up the possibility of a move to Europe for Thato Sibiya. The club is evaluating its options regarding the 20-year-old left-back, though no final decision has been made on his future.

Sibiya is viewed as a significant talent within the Sundowns development system. He represented South Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile last year and has since earned nine caps for the junior national team. While he was promoted to the Sundowns senior squad in January and played a few matches late last season, he has not been included in a matchday squad during the current campaign.

The club is not actively trying to force the player out, but they are monitoring interest from abroad. Any potential transfer would depend on the specific nature of the interest and whether the Brazilians receive an offer that meets their requirements. The transfer window remains open until September 21.

This situation follows the recent departure of Thapelo Maseko, another young international player. Sundowns agreed to a deal for Maseko to join FC Copenhagen in Denmark. Maseko, who performed well during the World Cup with Bafana Bafana, is scheduled to undergo a medical this weekend before signing a three-year contract in Europe.

Sundowns had originally intended for Sibiya to integrate into the first-team setup this season. The club has previously used a similar pathway for young players such as Gomolemo Kekana, Malibongwe Khoza, and Bennet Mokoena to transition into the senior side.
