Marcel Opoku credits Ghana street football for shaping his game

Marcel Opoku says the freedom and creativity of Ghanaian street football remain central to the player he has become. The 24-year-old winger has joined Swedish Division One club Assyriska FF on a one-year contract that includes an option for an extension.

Opoku’s football development has taken place across Ghana, England and Spain. He says each country gave him a different influence, with the spontaneity of street football in Ghana later combined with England’s tactical discipline and Spain’s focus on technical quality.

The Ghanaian believes that mix has produced a player who can trouble defenders through his intelligence, technical skill and unpredictability. He says he is capable of creating opportunities from wide positions when given room, while also helping teammates by producing chances and finding ways through defensive lines under pressure.

Opoku also considers his ability to operate with both feet an important part of his game. His qualities include shooting from distance, adding another threat to the creative options he offers from the wing.

His move to Assyriska follows his time with Spanish fourth-tier side RCD Ricla. Opoku was attracted by the Swedish club’s history, its strong connection with supporters and the demanding standards expected within the team. He sees those conditions as suitable for the next stage of his development.

The winger’s immediate priority is to settle into Swedish football and compete for opportunities. He plans to maintain his fitness, work hard in training and earn his place in the side at Assyriska FF.
