Maseko explains why FC Copenhagen move is a dream come true
Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko has joined FC Copenhagen on a four-year deal, calling the move a chance to build a new European chapter.
Thapelo Maseko has joined FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract after the Danish club agreed a R28 million deal with Mamelodi Sundowns. The Bafana Bafana winger says the move fulfils a long-held ambition and gives him the chance to establish himself in Europe again.
The 22-year-old views Copenhagen as a club with strong international standing. He was also encouraged by the positive accounts shared by Sibusiso Zuma about the team, its supporters and life in the Danish capital. Maseko will wear the number 12 shirt as he begins his new chapter.
Maseko arrives with the ambition of making a meaningful contribution rather than simply joining the squad. He wants to help Copenhagen win, make his own mark and use the opportunity to push his career forward. Several clubs had shown interest, but the 16-time Danish league champions secured his signature.
The transfer takes him back to Europe after a season on loan at AEL Limassol in Cyprus. He played 15 matches for the club, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Sundowns had indicated that he was not part of their plans and allowed him to choose his next destination.
His form also helped restore his place in the South African national team. Maseko returned from the FIFA World Cup after a strong tournament, contributing to Bafana Bafana’s progress to the knockout stage. He was named player of the match in the final group game, a 1-0 victory over South Korea.
Copenhagen are second in the Danish Superliga and have won three of their opening three league matches. Their recent sequence also includes a 3-3 draw away to Polessya, followed by victories over Viborg and Lyngby, while they beat Silkeborg IF 3-1. The club are also in the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs, where they are due to face Finland’s Inter Turku.
Maseko now joins a side competing domestically and in Europe, with his move combining a return to the continent with an opportunity to play for one of Denmark’s most successful clubs.
