Matchroom signs Odel Kamara as flaws temper 154-pound promise

Matchroom has signed Odel Kamara, whose speed impressed in the amateurs but whose balance, power and defence remain concerns at 154 pounds.

Matchroom Boxing has signed Odel Kamara as a potential new star, but the 154-pounder enters the professional ranks with technical weaknesses still evident. His speed is a major asset, while his limited punching power and predictable movement could give stronger opponents clear targets.

Kamara’s most recent amateur contest was a 2025 World Championship semifinal against Torekhan Sabyrkhan. The Liverpool fighter used rapid combinations and quickly moved away before attacking again, but Sabyrkhan absorbed the pressure, advanced consistently and forced repeated clinches. The Kazakh landed the heavier punches, controlled the fight’s direction and won the decision before going on to take the gold medal.

The defeat highlighted problems with Kamara’s entries. He often leans forward when jumping into range, leaving his head available for lead hooks, straight right hands, jabs and short uppercuts. His retreats offer some safety after he attacks, but moving back in straight lines can make his rhythm easier to read.

Kamara’s punch output has also not been matched by convincing power. He has recorded only one stoppage in 21 amateur victories, allowing opponents to stand their ground rather than respect every combination. Fighters who continue pressing after his attacks could force him into holds or pin him close to the ropes.

Those issues may become more significant in the professional game, where longer fights give opponents more time to identify patterns and target the body. Kamara will need to improve his balance, defensive positioning and ability to deal with pressure. His current habits also leave openings when opponents follow him inside.

Matchroom can manage his development through careful matchmaking, keeping him away from the most rugged pressure fighters while he gains experience. Professional coaching may sharpen his technique, but his path towards a world title will demand defensive improvement as well as the speed that made him an attractive signing.
