Medeama draw 2-2 in Ivory Coast as Amankwah targets progress

Medeama assistant coach Yaw Amankwah says the Ghanaian champions will fix their defensive problems after a 2-2 pre-season draw in Ivory Coast.

Medeama SC ended their residential camp in Ivory Coast with a 2-2 draw against AFAD Plateau, leaving assistant coach Yaw Amankwah focused on improving the team’s defending before the 2026/27 season begins.

The Ghana Premier League champions played four friendlies during the camp. They won two of their opening three matches and lost the other before sharing the points with AFAD Plateau in the final game.

Medeama scored in each of the four matches, but also conceded in every one. That record has raised concerns about their work without the ball, even though the attacking returns have provided a positive element of their preparation.

Amankwah said the squad is using the pre-season to identify and correct its mistakes. He added that the players are making progress gradually and that the coaching staff will continue working with them on their defensive organisation before competitive football resumes.

The team will now return to Ghana for the last stage of its pre-season programme. Medeama’s preparations are aimed at a campaign that will include challenges for domestic honours and a place in the CAF Champions League.

The Ivory Coast camp has therefore given the technical team four matches in which to assess the squad. The defensive record remains the clearest area for improvement, with Amankwah stressing that the work must be completed before the new season starts.
