Mosimane calls for more white players in Bafana Bafana

Incoming Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane wants to increase football participation in South African schools to develop more white talent.

Incoming Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has called for a greater presence of white players within South African football. The 62-year-old believes the national team needs to see more white youngsters progressing from school systems into professional leagues and the national setup.

Mosimane noted that football needs more active promotion in South African suburbs, where rugby currently holds a dominant position. He observed that rugby infrastructure, such as goal posts, is more visible in many towns and suburbs. He suggested that football should look at the development models used by rugby schools to improve its own reach.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach expressed a desire to work with the Department of Basic Education to increase football participation at prominent private and top schools, such as Grey College and Paul Roos Gymnasium. He believes that establishing partnerships between the government, schools, and football structures is essential for creating sustainable development programmes.

Mosimane highlighted a trend where white youths participate in football at a youth level but often stop playing before reaching the professional ranks. He argued that these players need to be showcased and integrated into the Bafana Bafana pathway. He maintained that football selection should be based entirely on ability rather than race or background.

Through his own Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools (PMSS) programme, the coach remains focused on player development. He has already engaged with the Minister of Basic Education regarding the need for these initiatives and intends to push for direct involvement with major schools to implement formal football programmes.
