NAL round three sets title race, relegation fight and Championship stakes
Thames Valley Harriers and Harrow AC meet with the NAL Premiership title in sight, while third place, relegation and promotion places remain open.
Thames Valley Harriers and Harrow AC meet at Eton on Saturday with the National Athletics League Premiership title at stake. Thames Valley hold a two-point advantage, and a top-two finish would be enough to secure the championship. Harrow must finish at least two places ahead of their rivals to overturn that deficit.
Thames Valley arrive with considerable sprint depth. Bianca Williams is listed for the 4x100m, while Annie Tagoe, Kaya Slater, Louise Evans and Emma Nwofor cover a range of individual and relay events. Slater is entered for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, with Evans down for the 200m and relay. Williams and Nwofor also add experience, with Nwofor competing in the 100m hurdles as well as the 100m.
Charlotte Buckley will contest the 400m and 800m for Thames Valley after a strong run of results that includes an 800m and 1500m double in Derby and a 3000m victory in Woodford. The team’s field-event options include European long jump finalist Archie Yeo, triple jumper Lily Hulland and pole vaulter Nemiah Munir.
Harrow’s squad includes pole vaulter Owen Heard, who has cleared 5.71m this season. That mark is above the National Athletics League record of 5.61m set by Luke Cutts in 2013. Nick Percy is entered in the discus and shot put, while Stephanie Okoro will combine the 400m hurdles with the 400m. Joy Eze is listed for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m.
The contest for third place will see WGEL face Glasgow Jaguars. WGEL include discus thrower Kirsty Law, long jumper Sam Khogali and Noa Chodokufa, who will run the 200m and 4x400m after helping the club win the relay in Derby. Glasgow have Alyson Bell, Lucy Fraser and Dean Patterson available across the sprint programme after Commonwealth duty, and won the 4x100m in Woodford.
Swansea Harriers are four league points behind their closest rivals and face a difficult final round in the fight against relegation. Tonbridge AC, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow and Birchfield Harriers are level on six league points, with the order to be decided by match points. Tonbridge are only eight match points ahead of WSEH, while Birchfield trail WSEH by 27.50.
The Championship also reaches a decisive stage, with three closely contested groups and eight clubs pursuing the eight promotion-match places available on September 12. The third round is therefore set to decide far more than the Premiership title, with the promotion and relegation positions still unsettled.
