Nathan Tella puzzled by Super Eagles snub after Bundesliga form
Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella is surprised by his continued Nigeria omission after three seasons of regular Bundesliga football.
Nathan Tella is puzzled by his continued absence from Nigeria’s senior team despite maintaining a regular role at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The 27-year-old has not been given another sustained opportunity with the Super Eagles since making his international debut in 2023.
Tella’s debut came under former Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro. His only involvement with the national side since Eric Chelle took charge was in the Unity Cup last year, and he has not added another senior cap since that appearance.
The winger’s club form has remained steady over three Bundesliga seasons. Last season, he played 17 matches for Leverkusen, contributing one goal and four assists while operating on the flank and, at times, as a wingback.
That versatility has not led to another call-up from Chelle. Tella was not selected for a further chance despite his regular football in Germany and his contributions for the Bundesliga club.
His representative said Tella is also surprised by the situation because his performances for Leverkusen have continued to put him in contention for international football. The player is understood to remain focused on producing for his club while waiting for recognition from the Nigeria coach.
The next international break could provide another opportunity for Tella to return to the Super Eagles squad. His representative also indicated that the player will continue pursuing selection in the breaks leading towards the next Africa Cup of Nations.
