Neymar makes history as Santos beat Vasco 3-0 in Brazil Serie A

Neymar became the first Brazil Serie A player temporarily removed under a new anti-time-wasting rule during Santos’ 3-0 win over Vasco.

Santos defeated Vasco 3-0 in Brazil’s Serie A, but the result was accompanied by a first for Neymar. The Santos captain became the first player in the competition to be temporarily taken off the pitch under a new rule aimed at reducing goalkeeper time-wasting.

The incident followed treatment for Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazao during the match. Under the trial regulation, a goalkeeper whose treatment causes play to stop must be accompanied by a temporary reduction in the team’s numbers when the game resumes.

One outfield player must leave the field for one minute after play restarts. Santos’ coach had 10 seconds to nominate the player who would serve that period away from the action. The coach did not make a selection within the allotted time, so Neymar was required to leave because he was the team captain.

Neymar’s removal was therefore not the result of a foul or another disciplinary offence. He served a temporary suspension while Santos played with one fewer outfield player, before returning to the match. The regulation is intended to discourage goalkeepers from using medical attention to delay proceedings.

The experiment is being monitored beyond Brazil, with similar measures expected to reach other major competitions. The Premier League is among the leagues identified as a possible future adopter, which could bring the same captain-selection situation to other top-level matches.

For Santos, the unusual episode came during a 3-0 victory over Vasco and did not change the final score. Neymar’s role as captain, combined with the missed nomination by the coach, made him the first player affected by the new mechanism in Brazil’s top division.
