Nwabali faces competition for Super Eagles spot as Okoye recovers
Maduka Okoye's return to full training at Udinese complicates Stanley Nwabali's chances of reclaiming the Nigeria number-one goalkeeper position.
Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali faces uncertainty regarding his starting role for the Super Eagles following fitness updates on Maduka Okoye. While Okoye's recent shoulder injury initially suggested Nwabali might reclaim the national team's number-one shirt, the Udinese goalkeeper has now returned to full training.
Okoye sustained the shoulder injury during a pre-season training session three weeks ago. There were initial concerns that the injury would sideline him for several months, which would have likely cleared the path for Nwabali to secure the starting position for Nigeria's upcoming international fixtures.
However, Okoye is now back in training and could feature in Udinese's Coppa Italia match against Padova this Saturday. Although the Italian club is being cautious to avoid a relapse, Okoye is expected to be ready for the Serie A season opener against Como on August 22.
This recovery timeline ensures that Okoye will be available for Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September. His availability presents a challenge for coach Éric Chelle, who must decide between Nwabali and Okoye. Okoye earned significant praise for his performances against Portugal and Poland in June, which placed him in contention for the starting role.
Nwabali, who was Nigeria's primary goalkeeper for two years before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, recently returned to Chippa United after a period away from football due to personal health concerns. Since his return to club action last month, he has demonstrated sharp form.
Coach Chelle now faces a selection dilemma. He must weigh the recent strong performances of Okoye against the reliability of Nwabali as he prepares the squad for the upcoming international break.
