Olopade urges calm after Nigeria's 2-1 2027 FIFA World Cup exit
NSC chief Bukola Olopade has asked Nigerians to remain calm after South Africa’s 2-1 win ended the Super Falcons’ World Cup run.
South Africa beat Nigeria 2-1 in Casablanca to end the Super Falcons’ hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The defeat also broke Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the women’s tournament since 1991.
National Sports Commission director general Bukola Olopade has urged Nigerians to stay calm after the setback. He acknowledged the disappointment but said defeats are an unavoidable part of competitive sport and warned against allowing the result to dominate attention around Nigerian athletics.
Olopade said work had begun on a review of the Super Falcons’ technical structure. Changes to the coaching set-up are being considered as Nigeria turns towards the 2028 Olympic qualifying cycle. The review follows a poor WAFCON campaign in which the defending champions lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
That tournament exit left the Falcons needing to overcome South Africa in the decisive play-off for the final World Cup route. The 2-1 loss in Morocco then completed a difficult sequence and denied Nigeria a place in the competition for the first time since the World Cup began.
The NSC chief also said football should not eclipse progress in other Nigerian sports. He highlighted the country’s showing at the recently completed Commonwealth Fencing Championships, where Nigerian competitors won historic medals across several events.
The emphasis on fencing forms part of a wider effort to spread investment and development opportunities beyond Nigeria’s most prominent sporting disciplines. Olopade said the football disappointment should lead to lessons and corrective action, while the country continues building programmes in multiple sports.
The Falcons’ failure has added to scrutiny of their preparation and technical management, coming after Nigeria’s men also missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Olympic qualification now provides the team’s next major competitive target as the NSC considers its response.
