Serie A: Chukwueze targets Milan role after 4-2 Manchester United win

Samuel Chukwueze scored once and supplied two assists for AC Milan in their 4-2 pre-season victory over Manchester United in Wroclaw last weekend. The Nigeria international’s performance has strengthened his case for a larger role under head coach Ruben Amorim.

Chukwueze has been used as a wing-back by Amorim, a change from his usual position farther forward. The 27-year-old has welcomed the adjustment and sees it as an opening to establish himself as a regular starter at Milan.

The Nigerian believes his progress will depend on making the most of the opportunity. He has stressed the importance of continued work and confidence as he adapts to the demands of the position and competes for a consistent place in the team.

His immediate challenge comes as Milan look to improve after an uneven run of results. The club’s last five matches have produced one win, two draws and two defeats: a 1-1 draw with Inter, a 2-2 draw away to Celtic, a 2-1 loss to Cagliari, a 2-1 victory at Genoa and a 3-2 defeat by Atalanta.

Chukwueze spent last season on loan at Premier League club Fulham. His contribution against Manchester United now gives him a strong platform as he attempts to convince Amorim that he can provide width, defensive work and attacking production from the wing-back role.

The friendly display does not settle his place in the side, but it has given the former Fulham loanee a clear opportunity to push his claims. Chukwueze’s next task is to carry that form into Milan’s competitive campaign and turn the tactical switch into a permanent role.
