Strand shocks Ingebrigtsen and Hocker in Diamond League 1500m, 3:30.77

Ethan Strand won the Diamond League 1500m in Chorzów in 3:30.77, beating Phanuel Koech, Cole Hocker and Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Ethan Strand won the men’s 1500m in 3:30.77 at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzów. Phanuel Koech finished second in 3:31.14, Cole Hocker was third in 3:31.16 and Jakob Ingebrigtsen took fourth in 3:31.19.

The 23-year-old American produced his first Diamond League victory after sitting 11th at the 800m mark. He moved through the field on the final lap and passed the leading contenders to claim a major upset.

Ingebrigtsen had controlled much of the race before the finish, leading at the bell and again along the back straight. The Norwegian was competing in a Diamond League 1500m for the first time since his appearance over the distance at the Tokyo Olympics last September, but could not hold off Strand’s late surge.

Strand’s win came during a meeting that produced seven records at the venue and two world-leading performances. Mykolas Alekna supplied the biggest mark in the discus, extending his Diamond League record to 72.58m after throwing beyond 71m three times.

Oblique Seville won the men’s 100m in 9.83 seconds, ahead of Kenny Bednarek on 9.87, with every finalist running under 10 seconds for the first time in the event’s history. Collen Kebinatshipi also set a world-leading mark of 43.59 in the 400m.

Alison dos Santos defeated Karsten Warholm for the third time this season in the 400m hurdles, winning in a world-leading 46.43. Gemechu Godana beat Soufiane El Bakkali in the 3000m steeplechase with a meeting record of 8:02.74, while Tsige Duguma won the women’s 1500m in a world-leading 3:55.06.
