Temwa Chawinga takes WAFCON Golden Boot after five-goal run

Malawi forward Temwa Chawinga won the WAFCON Golden Boot after scoring five goals and adding two assists during the Scorchers’ run to the final.

Temwa Chawinga has won the WAFCON Golden Boot after scoring five goals for Malawi during the tournament. The forward also supplied two assists, giving her the decisive edge in a tightly contested race for the scoring award.

Chawinga finished level on five goals with Zambia’s Barbra Banda, Ivory Coast’s Ines Konan and Cameroon’s Marie Ngah. Her greater contribution beyond her goals separated her from the other three leading scorers and secured the individual honour.

The award completes a standout campaign for Chawinga, who led Malawi’s Scorchers to the WAFCON final. Malawi’s progress gave the team a place in the tournament’s decisive match, with Chawinga’s attacking output central to that run.

Her five-goal tally made her one of the tournament’s most productive forwards, while the two assists strengthened her claim in a field that included several established attacking players. Banda, Konan and Ngah matched her scoring total, but none equalled her combined goals and assists.

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina received the Golden Glove. The Benfica player was recognised after helping the Indomitable Lionesses through the knockout rounds, including their quarter-final against Nigeria and semi-final against Morocco.

Bihina saved a penalty late in extra time against Morocco and then made three stops in the subsequent shootout. Those performances helped Cameroon reach the final and brought the goalkeeper the tournament’s main individual award in her position, while Chawinga claimed the prize for the leading scorer.
