Uganda Open 2026 asks if another Day One leader will fall short

The Uganda Open’s 94th edition will be played from 25 to 29 August 2026 at the Uganda Golf Club, with another Day One leader hoping to avoid the fate of several predecessors. The 72-hole event offers Ugx 15 million across the top 15 players, including Ugx 3 million for the winner.

Early leadership has not always translated into success at the championship. Ronald Kidega took the opening advantage in the 1990s against a field that included Deo Akope and Stephen Birungi, but finished as runner-up. Birungi claimed the title for a second consecutive year.

Martin Ochaya also led after the first round in 2014. His opening score of 1-over-par 73 was the best of the day, but he could not retain top spot in the following round after a stray ball struck his leg at the 12th hole and restricted his movement.

Last year brought another example. Zambia’s Dominic Musonda led for three days at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club before Joseph Cwinyaai went on to win the Open. Cwinyaai, a two-time champion, is among the leading local names expected in the 2026 field.

Ronald Reagan Akena, the 2024 champion from Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club, is also among the home contenders. He has identified his 2023 experience, which he linked to course fear and limited experience, as something he does not want to repeat. Akena says he now has more experience as he prepares for another challenge.

The field will include players from Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. Alongside Akena and Cwinyaai, the listed Ugandan contenders include Juma Abiti, Abdullah Kakooza, Joseph Kasozi, Abdul Kaketto, John Musimenta, Amon Bwambale, Godfrey Kambale and Lawrence Walakira.

The championship is an Official World Golf Ranking event, giving competitors ranking points in addition to the prize fund. Sadi Onito remains the record holder with 12 Uganda Open victories, a mark no amateur has surpassed.
