Tyson Fury offers positive update on Anthony Joshua fight location
Tyson Fury says major news on his long-awaited fight with Anthony Joshua is close as negotiations over the venue continue.
Tyson Fury has offered a positive update on his proposed heavyweight fight with Anthony Joshua, saying an announcement is close despite continuing uncertainty over the venue. The two fighters have signed contracts, but the location remains a major issue in the negotiations.
Fury said through social media that important news about the bout would be released soon and indicated that the fight was moving towards an announcement. His message was intended to reassure fans after fresh concerns that the contest could again fail to happen.
The dispute centres on the agreement for the fight to be staged in the United Kingdom. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said the contract specifies Britain, while efforts to move the event to New York have been explored to increase its revenue potential. Those competing plans have required further discussions between the sides.
Hearn has also warned that announcing the fight before the remaining arrangements are finalised could put the entire contest at risk. Netflix has already promoted the event with a trailer, but it has not given a date or named a venue, instead presenting it as an event to come later.
Both men strengthened the case for the meeting with recent victories. Fury defeated Mariusz Wach in Thailand last month, while Joshua beat Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia the following night. Those results added momentum to a bout that supporters have been waiting for for almost a decade.
Fury’s latest comments suggest that the location negotiations may be nearing a conclusion, although no official date or venue has been announced. A New York agreement would differ from the preference expressed by many supporters, pundits and fellow fighters, who have argued that the British heavyweight contest should take place in the UK.
