Boots Ennis faces a tougher route to Canelo than Crawford did
Jaron “Boots” Ennis has no guaranteed route to Canelo Alvarez, unlike Terence Crawford, whose move up was backed by Turki Alalshikh.
Jaron “Boots” Ennis has no guaranteed route to a fight with Canelo Alvarez, despite Tim Bradley urging him to move up to 168 pounds and pursue the Mexican star. Terence Crawford reached Alvarez without first defeating the leading contenders in the super-middleweight division, giving him a path Ennis does not currently have.
Bradley raised the idea in a social-media video, pointing to Ennis’s previous work as one of Alvarez’s sparring partners. He presented a move to 168 pounds and a direct challenge to Alvarez as the kind of ambitious step Ennis should take instead of focusing on Crawford.
Crawford’s route was shaped by the backing of Turki Alalshikh. He received a headline opportunity against Israil Madrimov even though neither fighter had established a strong pay-per-view following. The event drew limited pay-per-view interest, but Alalshikh continued to support Crawford and helped secure the Alvarez fight.
That opportunity meant Crawford did not have to work through the leading names at 168 pounds. He moved first to 154 pounds for the Madrimov fight and then went straight to Alvarez, rather than facing dangerous super-middleweights such as Osleys Iglesias, Christian Mbilli or Diego Pacheco.
Ennis would face a different risk if he followed Bradley’s advice. He would be entering a division containing naturally bigger opponents without any confirmed Alvarez fight waiting at the end. Alvarez has not shown interest in facing Ennis, and there is no certainty about how many bouts remain in his career.
The commercial picture also works against Ennis. Alvarez could prefer Hamzah Sheeraz, whose British support offers wider international potential, while Ennis does not yet have Crawford’s résumé or the financial backing that moved Crawford to the front of the queue. Alvarez’s defeat by Crawford also makes another loss to a former welterweight especially damaging, while beating Ennis would bring limited credit. For Ennis, the proposed climb therefore carries substantial sporting risk without Crawford’s guaranteed reward.
