Jack Catterall revives ostarine issue in attack on Ryan Garcia
Jack Catterall hit back at Ryan Garcia by revisiting the ostarine case and questioning how Garcia secured his WBC welterweight title shot.
Jack Catterall has answered Ryan Garcia’s claim that he is irrelevant by bringing up the banned substance found in Garcia’s system around his April 2024 fight with Devin Haney. Catterall also questioned Garcia’s route to the WBC welterweight title.
The secondary WBA welterweight champion shared an image explaining ostarine, a substance researched for muscle growth and for treating muscle-wasting conditions. The post followed Garcia’s criticism of Catterall, who had described Haney as “a real one” and said Haney’s only defeat had come against a drug cheat.
Catterall argued that Garcia had received a world-title opportunity through his popularity rather than his recent results. Garcia had lost a wide decision to Rolando Romero in May 2025 before moving straight into a championship fight with Mario Barrios. That victory over Barrios made Garcia the WBC welterweight champion.
Catterall also put himself forward as a potential next opponent for Garcia if he beats Conor Benn on September 12. His comments came while he was publicly supporting Haney, whose team is seeking an opponent and could also consider Liam Paro.
The exchange reflects the different positions of the two fighters. Catterall holds a secondary world title but still needs Haney or Garcia to select him for the major fight he wants. Garcia’s popularity has given him access to larger opportunities despite the loss to Romero, while Catterall has argued that his own path has required him to earn each step.
Catterall’s criticism also carries a clear career motive. A win over Benn would strengthen his case for a fight with Garcia, but Garcia would then hold a championship and retain several more lucrative options. For now, Catterall can challenge Garcia’s legitimacy publicly, but he cannot compel him to accept the bout.
