Watford host Southampton in Sky Bet Championship opener

Watford host Southampton at Vicarage Road this Sunday afternoon for the opening match of the 2026/27 Sky Bet Championship season. The fixture marks the league debut for both clubs following Southampton's recent Carabao Cup victory over Colchester United.

Southampton enter the campaign with a 21-game unbeaten run in the Championship. However, Tonda Eckert's side must overcome an initial disadvantage, starting the season on minus four points due to EFL sanctions. An opening day victory would help the visitors move toward parity before they play two consecutive home matches. Watford, managed by Alessio Dionisi, aim to avoid a repeat of their previous campaign, which ended with an eight-game winless streak.

Watford face selection challenges ahead of the match. Jeremy Ngakia remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, while the availability of Kwadwo Baah and Rocco Vata is uncertain. Jack Grieves and Travis Akomeah are currently undergoing rehabilitation. For the visitors, Caspar Jander is the only significant fitness doubt, though Finn Azaz is available following his appearance against Colchester.

Luca Kjerrumgaard is expected to lead the line for the Hornets. The Danish striker was the club's top scorer last season with 10 goals. He is joined in the attacking unit by Divin Mubama, who joined the club on Tuesday following a pre-season with Manchester City.

Southampton supporters will be well represented at Vicarage Road, with a full allocation of 2,313 fans expected in the away end. The visiting side will also debut a new away kit featuring an ultra blue design with light pink details and an iridescent crest.
