World Cup winner Rodri joins Barcelona after seven years at City
Spain midfielder Rodri has completed his move from Manchester City to Barcelona, saying he is ready to feel the excitement of a new challenge.
Rodri, 30, has completed his move from Manchester City to Barcelona after leaving the Premier League club. The Spain midfielder said the transfer offers a fresh challenge and a chance to recover the excitement of a new stage in his career.
Rodri has signed a long-term contract with the Catalan club and returns to Spanish football after previously playing for Atletico Madrid. Barcelona’s ambition and playing identity appealed to him, and he said he intends to contribute fully as the club works towards its targets this season.
The midfielder also welcomed the opportunity to work with Hansi Flick. Rodri expects the German coach’s methods to differ from those he has experienced before, describing that contrast as an opportunity to develop further as a player.
His departure ends a highly successful period at Manchester City. Rodri made 298 appearances for the club and collected 12 major honours, including Premier League titles, domestic cups and the Champions League. He leaves with pride in what the team achieved and gratitude for the memories created in Manchester.
The final part of his City career was affected by groin and hamstring injuries, but he returned to top form with Spain at the World Cup. He was named the tournament’s player of the competition as Spain won the trophy for the second time.
Rodri’s move also marks a return to the country where his senior career developed. Barcelona had to improve on its initial offer before reaching an agreement with City, while Rodri had earlier been linked with Real Madrid. He had already signalled his excitement about Barcelona, calling the chance to play for the club a dream.
