ZNA official says sport is vital for combat readiness
Colonel Fungayi Mapaya emphasizes that physical training and sports are essential for maintaining a fit and disciplined Zimbabwe National Army.
Sports and physical training are essential for maintaining a versatile and combat-ready Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), according to a senior military official. Colonel Fungayi Mapaya, the ZNA Director of Civil Military Relations, stated that sporting activities are fundamental to the physical health and general well-being of soldiers.
Speaking at a tennis kit handover ceremony at the Army Headquarters Officers’ Mess, Col Mapaya noted that sport is more than just recreation. He explained that it serves as a vital pillar for keeping military personnel physically fit and prepared for their professional duties. He added that these activities help foster discipline, teamwork, and cohesion among the force.
The remarks were made ahead of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Tennis Tournament, which is being hosted by the ZNA’s White Rhinos Tennis Club. For the first time, the club will host this defence forces competition at the Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks Tennis Courts. The tournament runs from today until Sunday.
Ten teams from across the defence forces are participating in the three-day event. The competition aims to allow personnel to compete while maintaining fitness and strengthening relationships through sport. The tournament is expected to conclude this Sunday.
Local company Arlo FEMI (Pvt) Ltd supported the event by donating sporting kit to the White Rhinos Tennis Club. The donation included T-shirts, caps, tracksuits, and souvenirs. Col Mapaya welcomed the private sector partnership, noting that such support helps develop sports and the tennis discipline within the military.
Arlo FEMI director Geoffrey Chihuri pledged ongoing assistance to the club and declared himself an honorary member of the White Rhinos Tennis Club. Col Mapaya challenged the White Rhinos team to perform well during the tournament to honour the support received.
