ZPC Kariba dedicate 1-0 Chibuku Super Cup 2026 win to ferry victims

ZPC Kariba defeated Ngezi Platinum Stars 1-0 in the Chibuku Super Cup and dedicated the victory to those who died in the recent Lake Kariba ferry disaster. Munashe Kamwendo scored the only goal at Baobab.

The result moved Kariba into the next round and gave coach Expense Chitukutuku the response he wanted after the team’s previous league defeat. He said the players had earned the win in honour of the people who lost their lives in the disaster.

Kamwendo had earlier been denied by Ngezi goalkeeper Tatenda Chikowero after breaking through in a one-on-one situation. The forward found the decisive finish shortly before the interval, sending a shot from inside the penalty area into the far corner after it took a deflection.

Ngezi increased the pressure after the restart but could not find an equaliser. Substitute Orlando Zvavarevi went close late in the game, only to see his effort from a tight angle hit the outside of the post. Marvelous Mukumba then tested Kariba goalkeeper Tatenda Munditi in the closing minute, but his low attempt was gathered without difficulty.

Ngezi coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva said his side’s failure to make use of its chances had proved costly. Kariba, meanwhile, came into the cup tie after a mixed league run that included defeats by Bulawayo Chiefs and Manica Diamonds, wins against Highlanders and TelOne, and a draw with Hunters.

Kariba are 13th in the 2026 Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League with 28 points from 26 matches. Their league record stands at five wins, 13 draws and eight defeats, with 16 goals scored and 21 conceded. They return to league action against MWOS on 22 August 2026.
