AFCON 2027 co-hosts given semi-final target by local organisers

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have been challenged to send at least one team to the AFCON 2027 semi-finals on home soil.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027, with at least one of the three host nations expected to reach the semi-finals. The target was set by Nicholas Musonye, chairman of Kenya’s AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee, who said the hosts should compete to win rather than simply take part.

Musonye identified Kenya’s Harambee Stars, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars and Uganda’s Cranes as the teams that must raise their level before the tournament. He said the hosts should aim to occupy one or even two of the four available semi-final places.

The ambition places added pressure on the three national teams, who will have home advantage during the expanded regional showcase. Their performances will also shape the tournament’s wider legacy, with organisers seeking benefits that extend beyond the matches.

The organising committee wants businesses across East Africa to gain from the event through the supply of goods and services, merchandising and other procurement opportunities. Informal traders, known in the region as Jua Kali, are also expected to benefit from commercial activity linked to the tournament.

Tourism is another part of the plan. Kenya’s organising team is working with Magical Kenya and the Kenya Tourism Board on travel packages intended to attract visitors before, during and after AFCON 2027, while promoting the wider region.

The tournament is also being linked to infrastructure improvements in Kenya. Talanta Sports City is under development, while Kasarani and Kipchoge Keino Stadiums are undergoing renovations. Musonye said the facilities should provide a lasting benefit for Kenyan teams and athletes after the competition.

Organisers have also committed to strict oversight of public funds and a firm response to corruption. Discussions are continuing on a common visa for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, a measure designed to make movement between the three host countries easier during the tournament.
