Genk back Ghana teenager Jerry Afriyie to become a top player
Belgian club Genk have signed Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie from Al-Qadsiah on a five-year deal and believe he can develop into a major player.
KRC Genk believe Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie has the potential to become an important player after completing his move from Al-Qadsiah. The 19-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Belgian club, which sees the transfer as a long-term investment in his development.
Genk’s head of football, Dimitri de Conde, identified Afriyie’s speed and direct style as key strengths. The teenager is considered capable of making sharp runs behind defensive lines, accelerating quickly and creating danger in one-on-one situations.
De Conde also made clear that Afriyie remains at an early point in his career. Genk intend to give him the conditions needed to improve, while expecting his qualities to add another attacking option to the squad both immediately and over time.
Afriyie arrives after spending last season on loan at La Louvière. He scored five goals and supplied one assist during that spell, giving him further experience in Belgian football before joining Genk on a permanent basis.
The Ghanaian is able to operate from either flank, as a central forward or in a position behind the striker. That versatility gives Genk flexibility in how they use him as he begins the next stage of his career in Belgium.
Genk’s assessment is based on both his current attributes and the scope they see for improvement. Afriyie’s five-year agreement provides the club with an extended period to work on his progress while he competes for a place in an established squad.
