Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets in historic Test win

Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets in Darwin on the fourth day of the first Test. Australia were dismissed for 284 in their second innings, leaving Bangladesh 57 runs to complete a historic victory.

The result gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil and only their second victory against Australia in the format. Their previous success came in Mirpur in 2017. Bangladesh had not played a Test series in Australia since losing 2-0 there in 2003.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz led the decisive bowling effort with 5-66 in the second innings. He removed Steve Smith before returning on the final day to dismiss Alex Carey, Cameron Webster, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. His contribution also included a valuable 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings, which helped establish a lead.

Hasan Mahmud was named player of the match after taking 6-55 in Australia’s first innings and 3-56 in the second. Cameron Green delayed the result with 104, his third Test century in his home country, but Mahmud ended the resistance by bowling him. Green had shared a 43-run eighth-wicket stand with Mitchell Starc, who made 18 before falling to Taskin Ahmed.

Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim for a duck early in the chase, but Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 30 and Shadman Islam scored 25 to finish the job. Mominul struck Beau Webster for the boundary that sealed the win.

The victory was a major reversal of Bangladesh’s recent results. Australia began the match as the top-ranked Test side, while Bangladesh were ninth. Days earlier, Bangladesh had been bowled out for 54 by a Cricket Australia XI in a Darwin warm-up match, and they had also lost to Zimbabwe in a one-off Test in Harare in June. The second Test is scheduled to begin on 22 August.
