Brighton push for record deal to sign Nigeria winger Femi Azeez
Brighton have made Millwall and Nigeria winger Femi Azeez their main target if Amario Cozier-Duberry leaves, with a move being pursued.
Brighton are pushing to agree a record transfer deal for Millwall winger Femi Azeez. The 25-year-old Nigeria international has emerged as the Premier League club’s preferred replacement if Amario Cozier-Duberry leaves.
Brighton have been considering alternative wide players as interest in Cozier-Duberry continues. Rangers have already had a £7.5 million offer rejected for the winger, who has two years remaining on his Brighton contract and is also attracting Championship clubs for a possible loan.
Cozier-Duberry spent last season at Bolton Wanderers, helping them win the League One play-offs. He scored eight goals and supplied 12 assists in 34 appearances, earning selection in the division’s team of the season. He has featured regularly under Fabian Hurzeler during pre-season but was an unused substitute in Brighton’s 1-0 home victory over Bologna.
Azeez is regarded as available if the right offer arrives, with the transfer deadline set for 3 September. His performances for Millwall earned him a place in last season’s Championship team of the season, while he was also nominated for the division’s Most Valuable Player award.
The winger received his first senior Nigeria call-up in the summer and is keen to secure a move that will help him retain his place in the national team. Brighton’s interest therefore comes as he seeks to build on his international breakthrough and his strong Championship campaign.
Brighton have won two and lost three of their last five matches, scoring nine goals and conceding seven. Their next fixture is at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League on 23 August, while the club continues to assess its options on the wing.
