Okocha remembers iconic Kahn goal that changed his life at Frankfurt

Augustine Okocha has recalled how his solo goal against Oliver Kahn at Eintracht Frankfurt brought him recognition across Europe and changed his career.

Augustine Okocha has recalled how a solo goal against Oliver Kahn during his Eintracht Frankfurt career changed his life and took his reputation beyond Germany. The Nigerian midfielder scored after dribbling past Kahn, who was then enjoying one of the strongest seasons of his career before his move to Bayern Munich.

Okocha said the goal became the moment he gained wider recognition outside Germany. It was scored before social media became part of football coverage, yet television stations across Europe repeatedly showed the move, turning it into one of the most recognised episodes of his career.

The former Super Eagles captain said the length of the dribble was not part of a deliberate plan. He was trying to create room to shoot, but defenders kept appearing in front of him. Rather than release the ball immediately, he continued searching for an opening until he was able to finish the attack.

The goal also carried significant importance within Frankfurt. Okocha recalled that his manager later told him his place in the starting line-up could have been at risk if the attempt had failed. The manager’s warning, as Okocha remembered it, was that he would not play again while the coach remained in charge if the ball had not gone in.

Okocha has since met Kahn but said the two have never spoken about the goal. He joked about the former German goalkeeper’s imposing presence and serious character, suggesting that it was not an easy subject to raise with him.

The Frankfurt period established Okocha as a major attacking talent before later spells with Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers. He had started his European career at a lower-tier German club, but the moment against Kahn helped make him one of Africa’s most celebrated midfielders.
