Vyner’s Wrexham suffer late 1-1 draw in English Championship opener

Zak Vyner played the full match as Wrexham surrendered victory against Cardiff to a stoppage-time free-kick in their 2026/27 Championship opener.

Wrexham began their 2026/27 English Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City after conceding from the final kick of the match. Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner completed the 90 minutes for Wrexham, who had led for almost the entire contest.

Vyner started on the right side of a three-man defence as Wrexham handed goalkeeper Anthony Patterson his debut. The visitors took the lead after only three minutes when Kieffer Moore controlled Danny Imray’s long pass and fired into the top corner.

Wrexham created enough opportunities to extend their advantage, but Cardiff goalkeeper Nathan Trott repeatedly kept the hosts in the game. Callum Doyle went close with a header and later struck the near post, while Moore also saw a header clip the crossbar.

Vyner was involved in one important defensive moment during the first half. After a misplaced backpass, Yousef Salech appeared to be through, but Patterson stopped the danger with a sliding challenge. Wrexham continued to carry the greater threat after the interval, with Doyle and Nathan Broadhead among those unable to beat Trott.

The visitors had further chances to settle the match late on. Substitute Sam Smith was denied twice by Trott, while a Rob Hyam header ricocheted off the crossbar during stoppage time. Smith then missed another opportunity on the counter-attack, leaving Wrexham exposed to a final Cardiff attack.

Cardiff won a free-kick near the edge of the penalty area in the closing seconds. Rubin Colwill curled the attempt into the top corner, denying Wrexham a winning start and securing Cardiff a point.

Vyner finished with an 82 per cent passing rate, completing 18 of 22 attempts, and recorded 33 touches while winning one duel. The result gives Wrexham a draw from their opening league fixture, with their dominance in chances not reflected on the scoreboard.
