CAF approves Nyayo Stadium for Gor Mahia and Tusker 2026 ties

Nyayo Stadium has been approved for CAF interclub matches during the 2026/27 season, clearing the way for Gor Mahia and Tusker to host their continental fixtures in Nairobi. The decision gives both Kenyan clubs access to a home venue for the opening stages of their campaigns.

Gor Mahia will use the stadium for their CAF Champions League first-round home match, while FKF Cup holders Tusker will begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign at Nyayo against Sudanese side Al Ahli Madani. Both clubs were handed difficult assignments in the draws held on August 6.

The approval is particularly important because Kasarani Stadium is closed for renovation and Talanta Stadium is still being built. Those projects are linked to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host. Nyayo is therefore the available Nairobi venue for the clubs’ continental home fixtures.

Gor Mahia enter the Champions League campaign as champions of the 2025 FKF Premier League. They finished first with 69 points from 34 matches, recording 20 wins, nine draws and five defeats while scoring 50 goals and conceding 22.

Their recent league form has been mixed. Gor Mahia have lost to Vipers and Nairobi United, drawn 0-0 with Mara Sugar and beaten APR 5-0 and Murang'a SEAL 3-1. Their next listed fixture is a Champions League meeting with Al Assiouty Sport on September 5, 2026.

Tusker’s place in the Confederation Cup came from their FKF Cup triumph. A win over Al Ahli Madani would set up a second preliminary-round tie against the winner of the contest between South Sudan’s Al Ghazala SC and Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars. Gor Mahia, meanwhile, will have the benefit of opening their Champions League tie at home before the return match away.
