Cardoso says Sundowns’ 1-1 draw shows a more dynamic PSL side

Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, with coach Miguel Cardoso saying the result reflected a team that has become more difficult to read. He linked that change to work carried out during pre-season and to the different options now available in their build-up play.

Cardoso said Sundowns can now vary the number and position of players involved when starting attacks. The team may use three players in the build-up or four, depending on the position of Rowen and the spaces available. Modau can also become part of a three-player structure, while another option involves using the centre-backs.

The coach believes those changes have made Sundowns more flexible in possession. Opponents face more uncertainty because the team is no longer building attacks from one fixed pattern, giving Cardoso another way to challenge how opponents organise themselves.

He also pointed to the qualities of recent additions Siyanda “Skhwishi” Ndlovu and Antonio Van Wyk. Cardoso said Ndlovu can operate inside or outside, threaten from distance and attack spaces. Van Wyk is more comfortable on the left but has been used on the right to meet the team’s needs.

Sundowns are also considering another midfield signing after a series of changes in that area. Cardoso referred to Keanu’s injury as a significant loss to the team’s organisation and described Jayden Adams’ passing last month as leaving a major gap in midfield.

The draw came as Sundowns prepare for a demanding run of matches. Cardoso said the club will assess whether it can add a player capable of covering more roles in the middle of the pitch, while continuing to develop the tactical variety he believes made the side harder for Chiefs to anticipate.
