Carlos Prates Calls Out Makhachev After UFC 330 Title Defence

Carlos Prates has targeted Islam Makhachev after UFC 330, promising to knock out the welterweight champion and become Brazil’s first holder of the division’s UFC title. The challenge followed Makhachev’s unanimous decision victory over Ian Machado Garry in the event’s main fight.

Prates attended UFC 330 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia and used the occasion to call for a title opportunity. The 32-year-old said he intends to stop Makhachev and take the belt to Brazil, setting out his ambition to become the country’s first UFC welterweight champion.

The Brazilian enters the conversation with three consecutive victories, all secured by knockout. His recent run has also included back-to-back wins over former champions, strengthening his claim to face the division’s champion.

Makhachev has also identified Prates as the leading contender for his next defence. After defeating Garry, the Russian said Prates’ activity gives him a stronger case than Shavkat Rakhmonov and Michael Morales. Rakhmonov is not currently fighting, while Makhachev said he could not recall Morales’ most recent bout.

The champion’s comments give Prates support from the man holding the belt. Makhachev said Prates was still competing regularly and therefore appeared more deserving of the next opportunity than the other contenders he named.

Makhachev also said he expects to fight again before Ramadan. He reported no serious injury from the Garry bout and indicated that January or the end of 2026 could provide a return date. He added that he is not cutting a significant amount of weight, leaving him ready to pursue another defence soon.
