Coach T misses SA Sports Awards due to new Malaysia role

Matebedi, widely known as Coach T, has expressed his desire to be in South Africa to attend the SA Sports Awards following his nomination for Coach of the Year. The sprints specialist will be unable to attend the ceremony in person and must send a representative instead.

The nomination arrived during a period of significant transition for the coach. He recently moved to Malaysia to begin a new position as the head of sprints coach, a role he officially commenced on 9 August. Matebedi described the recognition as an unexpected surprise from the Department of Sport.

He faces stiff competition in the Coach of the Year category. His fellow nominees include last year's winner, Rocco Meiring, and Proteas cricket coach Shukri Conrad. Despite the prestige of the nomination, Matebedi noted that the timing is difficult as he settles into a new country and coaching environment.

Having developed several South African sprint talents, including Gift Leotlela, Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, and Naheen Jack, Matebedi remains focused on athlete development. He stated that he does not view himself as a major international figure, but rather as someone dedicated to nurturing athletes.

Since arriving in Malaysia, the coach has noted the discipline and respect shown by his new athletes. He mentioned that their initial behavior and greetings have provided him with confidence regarding his ability to establish a productive working relationship with the team. He remains grateful for the nomination and views it as a potential stepping stone for his future career.
