De Zerbi convinces Gakpo to agree Tottenham move from Liverpool

Cody Gakpo has agreed in principle to join Tottenham after Roberto De Zerbi convinced him of a leading role in the Spurs attack.

Cody Gakpo has agreed in principle to join Tottenham Hotspur, with Roberto De Zerbi’s personal pitch helping persuade the Liverpool forward to move to north London. The Netherlands international is now regarded as fully convinced that a prominent role in De Zerbi’s plans would be the right next step in his career.

De Zerbi is understood to have told Gakpo’s representatives that the 27-year-old would be central to his attacking plans at Spurs. The Tottenham head coach’s vision for the club and the player’s responsibilities in his system made a strong impression, leaving the transfer close to completion before the summer window shuts.

Gakpo signed an improved Liverpool contract last summer after becoming a regular under Arne Slot. However, his form declined significantly during the previous season, leading to criticism from Liverpool supporters. Some fans questioned Slot’s continued selection of the Dutchman while young winger Rio Ngumoha was making progress.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV in a deal that could reach £45 million and has scored 50 goals in 180 appearances for the club. He has also won the Premier League and Carabao Cup during his time at Anfield. Liverpool are seeking more than £60 million for his departure and will not sanction a sale until they bring in a replacement.

The move forms part of De Zerbi’s wider effort to strengthen Tottenham’s attack. Manchester City winger Savinho is another major target, with Spurs reported to have made an £85 million offer and reached an agreement with the player on personal terms. Savinho started seven Premier League matches last season and missed Manchester City training ahead of the Community Shield against Arsenal because of illness.

Liverpool have held extensive discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, but the English club are not prepared to match PSG’s €150 million valuation. That situation leaves Gakpo’s transfer dependent on Liverpool securing another forward, even though the player has already accepted the prospect of joining Tottenham.
