Espanyol sign 26-year-old Drkusic ahead of Mourinho's LaLiga debut
Espanyol have added Slovenian centre-back Vanja Drkusic before Jose Mourinho's competitive Real Madrid debut after opening LaLiga with a 3-0 win.
Vanja Drkusic, 26, has joined Espanyol before Jose Mourinho’s official competitive debut as Real Madrid manager. Espanyol began their domestic campaign with a 3-0 victory over Levante and have now strengthened their defence ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Madrid.
The Slovenian centre-back has completed his move to the Catalan club after travelling overnight from Russia with his family. He underwent his medical checks after arriving in Barcelona and said he was tired but happy and proud to join Espanyol.
Drkusic presents himself as a defender who prefers physical contests. He said he enjoys duels and tackles, while also valuing the ability to retain possession and pass effectively from the back.
His arrival gives Espanyol another defensive option as they prepare to face a Madrid side starting a new competitive campaign under Mourinho. The Portuguese coach’s team must respond after a difficult pre-season, during which supporters criticised the lack of cohesion in some performances.
Drkusic is also aware that his surname can be difficult to pronounce. He said even people in Slovenia sometimes struggle with it, but hopes his performances against Madrid will make the name easier for supporters and commentators to remember.
The defender has praised Espanyol’s supporters and described them as among the best in the world. He believes their backing can provide an important advantage during the season, beginning with the visit of Mourinho’s Madrid side as Espanyol look to build on their opening win.
