Five Ghanaian debuts, Afriyie assist and Owusu’s 13th MLS goal

Five Ghanaian players started league life at new clubs, while Jerry Afriyie assisted for Genk and Prince Owusu reached 13 MLS goals.

Five Ghanaian players made league debuts over the weekend, with Jerry Afriyie providing an assist in Genk’s 4-4 draw with Royal Antwerp. Prince Owusu also continued his scoring run, reaching 13 MLS goals in CF Montreal’s 2-2 draw with LA Galaxy.

Ibrahim Osman began his Brighton career in the Premier League with a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, while Abdul Fatawu Issahaku helped Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2-1 on his first appearance. Caleb Yirenkyi debuted for Coventry in their 3-0 defeat by Arsenal, and Thomas Partey started his Al Shabab spell in a 1-1 draw with Al Khaleej.

Afriyie’s contribution came on his first league outing for Genk, although the Belgian side had to settle for a share of the points after an eight-goal contest. Joseph Pantsil also supplied an assist for LA Galaxy in their draw with Montreal, while Morrison Agyemang played in Charlotte FC’s 3-1 win over DC United.

Several other Ghanaian attackers found the net. Bismark Charles scored as Skenderbeu drew 2-2 with Vllaznia, Abdul Azis Yakubu struck in Qingdao West Coast’s 2-0 victory over Shandong Taishan, and Samuel Owusu scored and assisted in Maccabi Petah Tikva’s 2-1 win against Kiryat Shmona. Kwadwo Duah was on target for Ludogorets in a 1-1 draw with Slavia Sofia, while Rahim Ibrahim scored his second league goal of the campaign in Slovan Bratislava’s 2-1 win over FC Kosice.

In England, Antoine Semenyo completed Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth, while Tariq Lamptey returned for Queens Park Rangers against Bolton Wanderers. In Spain, Inaki Williams played for Athletic Bilbao in a 3-1 loss to Sevilla. Nathaniel Adjei featured for Lorient in their goalless match with Nice.

Elsewhere, Alexander Djiku helped Spartak Moscow defeat Zenit 2-0, Abdul Baba Rahman played in PAOK’s 4-0 win over Levadiakos, and Frank Acheampong completed Dalian Yingbo’s 1-0 victory against Chongqing. Stephen Acquah featured in Nordsjaelland’s 3-0 win over Sonderjyske, while Elisha Owusu made his Erzurumspor debut in a 4-0 loss to Galatasaray.
