Ghana Police back 2026 Democracy Cup ahead of Kotoko-Hearts

The 2026 Democracy Cup trophy tour reached Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 25. The match between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak is scheduled for Friday, August 28, at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Inspector General of Police COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu assured Parliament that the Police Service was prepared to support the fixture and provide security on match day. He also said the Service was ready to work alongside Parliament in protecting the country’s democratic values.

The trophy was presented by a parliamentary delegation headed by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. The visit formed part of a nationwide tour involving key public institutions ahead of the match.

Yohunu described the tour as an opportunity to reflect on the benefits of Ghana’s three decades of democracy. He said the Police Service supported efforts to preserve that system for present and future generations.

Djietror said the Speaker of Parliament introduced the Democracy Cup to use football as a way of advancing democratic principles. He identified unity, commitment, fair competition and perseverance as values shared by football and democracy.

The tour had already included a presentation to the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp. Further stops are planned at the Judicial Service, the Electoral Commission, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the Office of the President.

The Baba Yara programme will include curtain-raisers before the main fixture, with a Parliamentary XI meeting a Judiciary XI among the planned matches. The tournament was launched three years ago and the current tour will conclude when Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko meet on August 28.
