Islam Makhachev names Sambo as the best sport for self-defense

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev explained why Sambo is more practical than Jiu-Jitsu for real-world self-defense during a media event.

Islam Makhachev has identified Sambo as the superior martial art for self-defense compared to Jiu-Jitsu. Speaking at the UFC 330 media day, the welterweight champion argued that Sambo offers more practical advantages in real-life scenarios.

Makhachev noted that Sambo, which originated in the Soviet Union, allows a person to utilize clothing during a confrontation. He contrasted this with Jiu-Jitsu, stating that defending oneself in Jiu-Jitsu often requires a person to go to the ground. In contrast, he explained that Sambo allows a practitioner to remain standing to initiate techniques.

The champion's views follow his recent recognition for his work with the sport. Last month, the 34-year-old was named an Honored Master of Sport of Russia due to his role in popularizing Sambo. He was also appointed as a SAMBO Ambassador to the World in February.

Makhachev previously stated that fighters trained in Sambo are among the best in mixed martial arts, citing himself, Fedor, and Khabib as representatives of the discipline.

This discussion comes ahead of Makhachev's upcoming title defense at UFC 330. He is scheduled to face Ian Machado Garry in the main event. Makhachev secured the 170lbs belt last year with a unanimous decision victory over Jack Della Maddalena and remains unbeaten since 2015.

Garry enters the bout on a two-fight winning streak, with his most recent victory coming against Belal Muhammad in November 2025. This will mark the first time the Irishman has challenged for a title in his professional career.
