Jay-Jay Okocha picks Messi over Ronaldo in latest GOAT verdict

Nigeria legend Jay-Jay Okocha has chosen Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, citing the Argentine’s natural talent and wider influence on matches.

Nigeria legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has chosen Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in football’s long-running greatest-of-all-time debate. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Super Eagles star placed Messi ahead because of his natural ability and broader influence on games.

Okocha acknowledged Ronaldo’s quality but defined the Al Nassr forward mainly through his finishing. He compared Ronaldo’s role to that of Erling Haaland, describing both as exceptional goalscorers rather than players whose influence extends across every part of a match.

Messi, by contrast, was presented as a player with an instinctive connection to football. Okocha’s view is that the Argentine’s talent goes beyond scoring, with his creativity and ability to shape games making him the stronger choice in the debate.

The argument remains significant because Messi and Ronaldo have dominated individual and team honours for more than a decade. They have shared 13 Ballon d’Or awards, while Messi has won the prize eight times. The Inter Miami forward also has six European Golden Shoes and more than 900 career goals, along with over 400 assists.

Messi’s case was strengthened by leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title. His club career was built largely at Barcelona before his move to Inter Miami, where he continues to play in Major League Soccer.

Ronaldo, 41, has represented Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr. He has collected major individual and team honours and is approaching 1,000 career goals. Okocha’s verdict therefore separates the Portuguese star’s outstanding scoring record from what he considers Messi’s more complete command of football.
