Super Eagles goalkeeper Okonkwo set to leave Wrexham after 1-1 opener
Arthur Okonkwo is set to leave Wrexham after losing his place to Nathan Patterson, with Charlton, Derby and Bolton linked to the Super Eagles keeper.
Arthur Okonkwo is set to leave Wrexham after being omitted from their 1-1 Championship opener. Nathan Patterson started in goal for Wrexham, conceding once, while the Nigeria international was not included in the matchday squad.
The decision followed a difficult end to Okonkwo’s first Championship campaign. Manager Phil Parkinson had begun selecting Danny Ward ahead of him, raising doubts over whether the 25-year-old remained Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Okonkwo had been central to Wrexham’s promotion campaign after arriving from Arsenal on a free transfer in July 2024. He made 33 appearances and recorded 19 clean sheets in that season. In the Championship, he played 39 matches and kept 10 clean sheets.
Wrexham’s position became clearer after the club signed Sunderland goalkeeper Nathan Patterson for €8 million two weeks ago. Patterson’s selection for the opening league fixture, combined with Okonkwo’s absence from the squad, has left the former Arsenal player facing a future away from the Racecourse Ground despite having a year remaining on his contract.
Charlton Athletic, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers have been linked with the goalkeeper, although no formal bid has been submitted. Charlton is regarded as the likeliest destination, with Thomas Kaminski expected to leave the club, and discussions may have begun between Charlton and Wrexham.
The timing is important for Okonkwo, who needs regular first-team football to maintain his place in the Super Eagles setup. The summer transfer window is due to close in two weeks, while his current valuation is €5 million. Wrexham are expected to seek a fee around that figure before approving a sale.
